The bodies of two Belgian mountaineers, who had been missing in the Swiss Alps for approximately 34 years, have been identified after their discovery by melting ice, according to reports from the Italian news agency ANSA. Valais regional police announced that one mountaineer located the remains within an ice field situated in southern Switzerland, near the border with Italy, during April. The recovered bodies were transported to the Institute of Legal Medicine at the Valais Hospital in Sion.
Following DNA testing, police confirmed that the remains belonged to the pair of mountaineers who disappeared in the Weissmies area in 1992. At the time of their disappearance, the men were 39 and 41 years old. The Valais police department maintains historical records of missing persons within the region dating back to 1925, encompassing individuals lost in mountainous areas and along rivers.
Officials noted that the ongoing melting of the ice fields has led to the exposure of additional human remains. The recovery marks a significant finding for authorities tracking historical disappearances in the Alpine region.
