American Congressman Self: Implement the Ohrid Agreement and protect the rights of Albanians

American Congressman Keith Self conducted separate meetings in North Macedonia today with representatives from the Albanian Student Movement and with leaders of the Albanian opposition. The discussions addressed the current political trajectory of the nation, the status of the Albanian community, and the critical necessity of fully implementing the terms of the Ohrid Agreement. During the session with the Albanian Student Movement, representatives Mevlan Ademi, Besar Sejdiu, and Jon Selimi were present.

The students voiced significant concerns regarding the failure to enact the Law on the Use of Languages and pointed to various trends they believe undermine established Albanian rights within the country. The student delegation strongly emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Albanian language, upholding constitutional equality for all citizens, and maintaining the spirit of coexistence and representation originally guaranteed by the Agreement. The meetings underscore an ongoing focus by the American congressman on the political dialogue surrounding the Albanian population.

By engaging directly with both opposition figures and student advocates, the discussions aim to foster dialogue on institutional reforms and minority rights protections. The dialogue highlights the community’s commitment to achieving stability through adherence to agreed-upon frameworks, ensuring that the rights and status of the Albanian community are fully realized under national law.
