Female Iranian footballers have arrived in Istanbul, and they still don’t know how they will return home.

The Iranian women’s national football team has returned to Istanbul following a significant shift in circumstances. Five members of the squad have withdrawn their applications for asylum previously sought in Australia. This development follows Australia’s earlier decision to grant humanitarian visas to six Iranian players and one assistant staff member, stemming from their fears of persecution within Iran.

The situation escalated after several of the Iranian footballers failed to participate in the singing of the anthem before an Asian Cup match. This action resulted in severe repercussions; these footballers faced the potential of the death penalty and were labeled as traitors by Iranian authorities. The five returning players have joined their teammates in Kuala Lumpur, where the national side had been based since their departure from Sydney last week.

This move represents a reversal of their initial intentions. Only two Iranian players remain in Australia at this time. These footballers, along with the other Iranian players, had initially sought refuge due to concerns about their safety and freedom.
