“Freedom House”: North Macedonia remains a “partially free” country, much like most of its neighbors.

North Macedonia continues to be classified as a “partially free” nation in 2025, as detailed in the latest “Freedom House” report, “Freedom on the World.” The assessment reflects ongoing challenges concerning civil liberties and political rights within the country. The nation’s freedom index remains at 67 out of 100, mirroring the previous year’s ranking. This indicates a persistent situation where full freedom is not yet achieved.

The report highlights that Macedonia persistently grapples with corruption issues. Despite a vibrant public discourse involving media and civil society, journalists and activists experience considerable pressure and threats. “Freedom House’s” evaluation is founded on two key measures: political rights and civil liberties.

Political rights receive a score of 28 out of 40, while civil liberties are assessed at 39 out of 60. Several other countries share this “partially free” designation, including Montenegro (69), Albania (68), Kosovo (60), and Serbia. These nations, like Macedonia, face ongoing difficulties in fully securing and guaranteeing freedom for their citizens.
