Joseph: The advance of the Kosovo route towards NATO would force Serbia to accept the reality.

Edward P. Joseph, a former leading head of the OSCE mission in Kosovo, has detailed the necessary steps to compel Serbia to acknowledge the situation within the Western Balkans. He stressed that Serbia possesses no viable alternative other than to ultimately integrate into the European Union.

Joseph firmly believes that Serbia cannot evolve into a state mirroring Belarus within Europe. According to reports from Telegrafi, Joseph articulated his long-held position, asserting that the United States, the European Union, and especially NATO should leverage their influence to directly pressure Belgrade to make a definitive choice. He further elaborated that actively supporting Kosovo’s progression towards NATO membership would effectively force Serbia to accept the established reality.

Joseph’s arguments address the proposals recently voiced by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, concerning Serbia and Albania’s potential accession to the EU without prior negotiations with Kosovo. The core of his reasoning remains consistent: Serbia must recognize the undeniable shift in the region and embrace the path toward European integration, a process that necessitates alignment with the values and structures of the EU and, crucially, NATO.

  1. The progression of the Kosovo pathway toward NATO membership would inevitably necessitate Serbia’s acceptance of the existing circumstances in the Western Balkans.
