Customs officers at the Bllacë border crossing successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle a significant quantity of tobacco. The incident was reported by the Macedonian Express Gazeta on March 12, 2026, at 11:44. Approximately 120 kilograms of shisha tobacco, destined for water pipes, was discovered during the entry process.
The illicit tobacco shipment was valued at 384,000 denars and was intended for distribution within the Macedonian market. As a result of this illegal activity, a criminal complaint was formally filed by the Investigation Department against the individual responsible for the offense of “smuggling,” as outlined in the Criminal Code. This successful intervention prevented the unlawful trade of taxable goods, thereby avoiding a substantial sum in unpaid duties.
The total evaded taxes amounted to 744,000 denars, including 342,000 denars specifically related to excise taxes. The perpetrator, a North Macedonian citizen identified as F.B., had provided 480 packages of the shisha tobacco, each weighing 25 kilograms. The authorities successfully thwarted the attempt to introduce this contraband into the country, safeguarding the Macedonian economy from tax evasion.
