The Belgian Prime Minister believes Europe should reach an agreement with Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

The Belgian prime minister, Bart De Wever, has strongly advocated for a European resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, speaking in an interview featured in the Belgian newspaper, L’Echo. He emphasized the urgent need for a negotiated settlement to bring an end to the war. De Wever contends that achieving a diplomatic solution is also crucial for regaining access to affordable energy prices.

However, the European Union remains deeply divided on this approach. According to Euronews, as reported by Telegrafi, several key figures hold differing opinions. French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán have publicly supported direct discussions with Moscow.

Conversely, Poland and the three Baltic states firmly oppose any such talks. The prime minister further asserted that Europe’s current “dual strategy”—combining military assistance for Ukraine alongside economic sanctions against Russia—has proven unsustainable. This approach is no longer viable.
