The head of the North Macedonian Constitution excludes Albanian from “Safe City,” while BDI and VLEN clash.

The Chairman of the Constitutional Court of North Macedonia, Darko Kostadinovski, has generated considerable controversy following a recent session. Discussions centered on the legality of the “Safe City” system, and his remarks regarding language usage caused significant reaction from Albanian parties. During Tuesday’s proceedings, Kostadinovski insisted that SMS notifications within the system should be delivered in Macedonian and English, rather than Albanian.

He further argued that the constitution mandates that all citizens in North Macedonia possess knowledge of the Macedonian language. This stance has been interpreted by many as discriminatory. Arbër Ademi, the General Secretary of the Democratic Union for Integration (BDI), communicated to KosovaPress that this decision represents another instance of prejudice directed towards Albanians within the country.

Ademi stated that since February, the situation has been characterized by ongoing discrimination concerning security communications. The court’s position highlights a contentious issue regarding inclusivity and language rights within North Macedonia, particularly for the Albanian population. The debate underscores concerns about potential bias in the implementation of the “Safe City” initiative.
