The Latvian Parliament, known as the Saeima, approved the formation of a new government on May 28th. This political transition followed the collapse of the previous coalition, an instability exacerbated by recent incursions of Ukrainian drones into Latvia’s airspace. During a key vote in the Saeima, a new four-party center-right coalition secured the support of 66 out of 96 voting deputies.
This coalition will form the basis of the incoming government. As part of this arrangement, Andris Kullbergs, an opposition deputy from the center-right, was appointed as the interim prime minister. Kullbergs assumed this role in the lead-up to the parliamentary elections held in April.
The composition of the new administration includes Kullbergs’ United List alongside the New Unity party, which is led by former prime minister Evika Silin. The passage of this vote signifies a significant realignment in Latvian politics. The establishment of this new governing body marks a formal response by the Latvian parliament to the preceding political turbulence.
The mandate granted to the center-right coalition aims to stabilize the nation’s political structure following the disruptions caused by the airspace incidents.
