Opposition Protest in Tirana Met with Violent Clashes, Police Intervention
Tensions escalated significantly during Friday’s opposition-led protest against the Prime Minister in Tirana, marking a departure from previous demonstrations. Following speeches delivered from a central platform, a large number of protesters engaged in physical clashes with law enforcement. The unrest included the immediate throwing of fireworks and molotov cocktails directed at the Prime Minister.
Police responded swiftly, initiating intervention unexpectedly. Simultaneously, representatives from the Democratic Party (PD) appeared unprepared for the escalation, contributing to the intensity of the confrontations. According to the Interior Minister, individuals involved in the throwing of molotov cocktails were neutralized.
Several individuals, including Democratic deputies Luciano Boçi, Klevis Balliu, journalist Aulon Kalaja, and numerous protesters, sustained injuries from tear gas deployed by police. Those injured were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The Interior Minister emphasized that Albania would not be taken hostage by violence, asserting a commitment to maintaining order.
The incident represents a notable increase in the level of disruption observed during the opposition’s demonstration.
