Construction of regional depots continues to be delayed.

Regional Landfill Project Faces Continued Delays

The construction of a regional waste management facility has been under discussion for several years, aiming to standardize waste accumulation points across the Pellagonija and Southwestern regions. The project involves the establishment of three regional landfills – initially planned for locations near Novaci Monastery, Rusino, and Vardia – to manage waste from multiple municipalities. The Ministry of Environment initially targeted a commencement of construction in the second half of 2025, subsequently pushing the timeline to the second half of 2026.

Currently, the project is focused on preparing the necessary documentation for a tender process, intended to select an economic operator to oversee the construction. The planned construction will initially address waste management needs in the Novaci area, followed by sites in Rusino and the Vardia region. According to the Ministry, progress is ongoing and they anticipate announcing the tender process in 2026.

The initiative represents a key effort to establish a standardized regional approach to waste management and address existing inconsistencies in waste disposal practices. Further updates will be provided as the construction process advances.
