Traffic Violations Decrease Significantly Following Camera Installation in North Macedonia
A newly implemented “safe city” system utilizing security cameras in traffic locations across North Macedonia is demonstrating positive results. The system, activated three months ago, has overseen a substantial reduction in traffic violations. Data released by the Ministry of Interior indicates that during the initial trial period, over 60,000 violations were recorded across three cities where the cameras were installed.
However, figures from the end of March 2026 reveal a significant decline. In March 2026, the ‘Safe City’ system recorded 26,241 traffic violations within the monitored areas. Notably, a dramatic decrease was observed in red light running violations, with only 70 cases recorded – a 68.2% reduction compared to prior levels.
Officials attribute this change to the increased visibility and deterrent effect of the surveillance system. The ongoing operation of this traffic monitoring system is intended to contribute to a safer city environment and further data collection will be analyzed to assess the long-term impact of the initiative.
