Photographer’s Archive Captures 1999 Albanian Exodus
Tirana, Albania – A collection of 99 photographs, meticulously documented by photographer Asllan Krasniqi, offers a poignant visual record of the 1999 Albanian exodus following the final conflict in Kosovo. The extensive archive, housed within Krasniqi’s former residence, details the movement of Albanian refugees during a critical period. The photographs, taken entirely by Krasniqi himself in 1999, span the entirety of the housing unit and chronicle the journey from its initial stages.
The collection begins at the entrance and continues throughout the house, providing a comprehensive overview of the event. Krasniqi recounted the beginning of his documentation to Tëvë1, detailing a journey that commenced in Belgium with initial refugee camps. From Belgium, he traveled to Istanbul, establishing another camp accommodating approximately 8,000 individuals, which also included the temporary operation of schools.
Subsequent movements led him to Tirana and then to Kukës, where he spent a period documenting the ongoing exodus. The majority of the photographs, estimated at 90%, capture the movement of people and the conditions faced by those fleeing the conflict. This significant collection serves as a vital historical record of the 1999 exodus, offering a direct visual account of the displacement experienced by Albanians.
