Cyprus Enhances Military Bases to Support Humanitarian Evacuations
Cyprus is undertaking significant upgrades to two key military bases in partnership with the United States and the European Union, aiming to bolster its role as a regional center for humanitarian operations. According to a report by Gazeta Express published on April 20, 2026, at 11:52 AM, the initiative focuses on strengthening the nation’s capacity to facilitate evacuations from conflict zones in the Middle East. The “Andreas Papandreou” airbase in Paphos will undergo expansion to accommodate heavy transport aircraft, facilitating the rapid delivery of supplies and accelerating evacuation efforts.
Simultaneously, the “Evangelos Florakis” naval base in Limassol will receive a new helipad designed to support large helicopters, including Chinook models, for the transport of civilians from crisis areas. Initial funding of approximately 500,000 euros has been provided by the United States to support planning phases. The total investment for the projects, encompassing both bases, is projected to reach up to 14 million euros.
This strategic development underscores Cyprus’s commitment to contributing to international humanitarian assistance and reinforces the nation’s role as a vital hub for operations within the region. The upgrades to the bases are intended to improve response capabilities to ongoing crises.
