Kurti: Kosovo’s application for EU membership remains unheeded for 40 months, the Executive Committee for integration is established.

Kurti Expresses Continued Concern Over Kosovo’s EU Membership Application Delay

PRISTINA, Kosovo – Prime Minister Albin Kurti has reiterated his government’s concerns regarding the prolonged lack of response to Kosovo’s application for membership in the European Union. Speaking on April 20, 2026, Kurti stated that the application, submitted in December 2022, has yet to receive a formal response from the European Council after 40 months. Kurti emphasized the importance of addressing this delay, asserting that Kosovo continues to meet significant criteria for EU accession.

These include the establishment of a functional democracy, demonstrable economic growth, and alignment with the EU’s foreign and security policy objectives. To bolster the integration process, the Government of Kosovo has established the Executive Committee for EU Membership. This committee is designed to enhance inter-institutional coordination and accelerate Kosovo’s progress toward EU alignment.

Kurti indicated that the committee’s primary focus will be on streamlining procedures and ensuring consistent engagement with EU institutions. The Prime Minister’s comments underscore the ongoing efforts within Kosovo to advance its candidacy and highlight the continued need for a resolution to the outstanding application. The establishment of the Executive Committee represents a key step in this endeavor, according to Kurti.
