Kosovo Parliament to Hold Emergency Session on Electricity Billing Concerns
Kosovo’s Parliament will convene an extraordinary session today at 11:00 AM to address ongoing concerns regarding electricity pricing and billing practices for consumers. The session’s focus will be on investigating alleged irregularities within the electricity distribution sector. Last week, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) publicly criticized electricity distributors, asserting that consumers were being incorrectly billed and subjected to inflated rates, particularly during periods of lower demand.
The LDK claims that approximately 87 percent of the 884 verified distributors were found to have measurement inconsistencies. The Ministry of Industry is currently conducting an investigation, including the potential imposition of fines against Kosovo Electricity Corporation (KEDS) due to expired verification deadlines. In response to a surge in complaints – exceeding 500 – the Ministry has established a special commission to scrutinize suspected distributors.
KEDS has issued a statement denying the allegations, asserting that it is committed to accurate billing. The parliamentary session is intended to examine these claims and explore potential solutions to the ongoing issues surrounding electricity billing.
