European Commissioner Kos Expresses Hope for North Macedonia EU Accession Talks
Brussels – European Commissioner for EU Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated yesterday her anticipation for the future Bulgarian government to facilitate the initiation of accession negotiations for North Macedonia with the European Union. Speaking to members of the European Parliament, Kos emphasized the importance of continued support for the candidate country. Kos highlighted that North Macedonia must address a longstanding condition established in August 2022 – amending its constitution to incorporate the rights and representation of the Bulgarian community.
This condition, set by Bulgaria, remains a prerequisite for progressing towards EU membership. “I hope that the new Bulgarian government will help us bring North Macedonia to the start of negotiations,” Kos stated, underscoring the critical role of the Bulgarian government in this process. The Commissioner’s comments come ahead of Bulgaria’s upcoming elections and reflect ongoing discussions surrounding the EU’s enlargement strategy.
Kos’s remarks indicate a continued focus on resolving outstanding bilateral issues to unlock North Macedonia’s path toward integration with the European bloc. Further developments will depend on the outcome of the Bulgarian elections and the subsequent formation of a new government.
