Ohrid SOS: It is unacceptable to cut down trees near the source of the Black Drin.

Concerns Raised Over Vegetation Damage Near Ohrid Lake

SOS Ohrid has expressed serious concern following the publication of photographs depicting cut trees and destroyed vegetation near the Drini i Zi river sources in Sveti Naum, a protected area within the Galicica National Park. The images, released this morning, show damage to the area surrounding the river’s origin, a strictly regulated zone within the park. The organization has initiated a formal response, contacting multiple authorities to investigate the incident.

SOS Ohrid has requested an immediate extraordinary inspection by the State Environmental Inspectorate, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, municipal inspectors, and the Galicica National Park. The investigation will focus on determining the individuals responsible for the cutting of trees and the destruction of vegetation. Crucially, the request seeks clarification regarding whether permission was obtained from the park and other relevant institutions, and whether the activity occurred without authorization.

The area around the Drini i Zi river sources is a key component of the Ohrid region’s natural heritage and is subject to stringent protection measures. SOS Ohrid aims to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this damage and ensure accountability for any violations within the Galicica National Park.
