Russia falsified economic data to appear more resilient to the war and its sanctions.

Swedish Intelligence Reports Russia Manipulating Economic Data Following Ukraine Invasion

Stockholm – Sweden’s military intelligence has concluded that Russia has been actively manipulating its economic data to obscure the true state of its economy during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The Swedish Armed Forces Intelligence and Security Service (MUST) stated that publicly released figures depicting a decline in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and weak industrial production were deliberately presented to create a misleading impression of economic flexibility. According to reports, Russia is likely facing significantly greater challenges than officially acknowledged, including “higher inflation and a larger budget deficit.” MUST officials indicated that despite recent elevated oil prices, securing a sustained average price exceeding $100 per barrel for a full year would be necessary to adequately address the nation’s financial difficulties.

The intelligence assessment acknowledges that Russia’s revenue streams from oil have increased recently. However, analysts believe that the current figures do not fully account for the underlying economic weaknesses within Russia. The report underscores the deliberate nature of Russia’s economic reporting and its implications for understanding the country’s financial situation.
