Albanian Legend Details Tyrant’s Attempt to Suppress Joy
Bajram Karabolli, an Albanian peasant, has recounted a longstanding story concerning a tyrannical ruler who attempted to banish laughter from his domain. The narrative describes a region where profound sadness, cruelty, and anger were prevalent, contributing to widespread suffering and mortality. According to Karabolli’s account, individuals – including elderly men, women, young people, and children – were dying due to the pervasive atmosphere of despair.
The ruler, described simply as a “tyrant,” imposed a restriction on joy, a force believed to be vital for the rebuilding of life. A pivotal moment in the story involves a man who displayed a smile and encountered a similarly smiling woman. Together, they ventured into the forest during a full moon night, a time when jaguars were actively hunting.
It was during this night that a child was born, who subsequently grew up unaware of the tyrant’s decree. Years later, this child emerged from the forest and, upon laughing heartily, demonstrated a full range of expression, contrasting with those who had remained silent under the tyrant’s rule. The story highlights who resisted the suppression of joy and its potential impact on a community.
