Germany’s Labor Costs Remain High, Reflecting EU Trends
Germany continues to maintain some of the highest hourly labor costs within the European Union, according to recent reports. As of April 30, 2026, an hour of work in Germany is valued at an average of 45 euros, a figure only surpassed by a handful of other EU nations. Data from the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden indicates a significant increase in labor costs throughout 2025.
The average cost of an hour of work in both manufacturing and service sectors reached 45 euros. This represents a substantial difference compared to the EU average of 34.90 euros, with German companies paying 29 percent more. While labor costs rose by 3.6 percent in Germany last year, this was slightly lower than the EU average of 4.1 percent.
Despite this, Germany’s position as a country with elevated labor expenses remains consistent with previous assessments, reflecting ongoing economic pressures and workforce compensation levels. The figures underscore the challenges faced by German businesses operating within the competitive European market.
