Albania Experiences Significant Increase in Homicide Rate, Ranking Among Europe’s Highest

According to data released by Eurostat, Albania is among the European countries with the highest number of intentional homicides per capita. The country’s homicide rate has risen significantly, placing it within the top 10 across the continent. In 2024, Albania recorded 41 intentional killings, translating to a rate of 1.71 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, as calculated by Monitor.

This figure places Albania tenth in the rankings, following Lithuania (2.63), Latvia (2.4), Turkey (2.27), Montenegro (1.92), Estonia (1.82), Iceland (1.82), and Finland (1.78). The increase in this rate compared to 2023, when the rate stood at 1.27 per 100,000 inhabitants, is attributed to two key factors. The data highlights a concerning trend within Albania and positions it as one of the countries with the highest rates of intentional homicide in Europe.

Further investigation into the causes of this increase is ongoing. This information is based on data from Eurostat and calculations by Monitor.
