Albania Sees Surge in Renewable Energy Exports, Driven by Hydropower
April 30, 2026 – Albania experienced a notable rise in energy production during the first three months of 2026, primarily fueled by a substantial increase in hydropower output. According to data released by the Energy Community’s “Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism” report, hydropower generation rose by 70 percent between January and March of 2026, compared to the same period in 2025. This increase has positioned Albania as a leading net exporter of energy within the region.
The report highlights a significant advantage for Albania due to its growing capacity for renewable energy production. Specifically, Albania’s hydropower output facilitated increased exports to both Kosovo and European markets. The findings are part of the first quarterly report on the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
This mechanism assesses carbon emissions associated with traded goods, and Albania’s success in exporting renewable energy has been recognized. The data indicates a growing trend of renewable energy production within Albania, bolstering the nation’s energy sector and contributing to regional energy supply. The focus on renewable sources is a key element in Albania’s energy strategy.
