Gravina Denounces Calls for Italy to Replace Iran in 2026 World Cup
Former head of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, has strongly criticized suggestions that Italy should replace Iran as a participant in the 2026 World Cup. He described such proposals as “shameful,” asserting that only Italian supporters are entitled to success within the competition. Gravina’s comments followed his resignation from the FIGC at the end of March, triggered by Italy’s failure to qualify for the world cup for the third consecutive cycle.
Despite this outcome, Gravina maintained that he fulfilled his responsibilities as president. Speaking to the “Otto e mezzo” program on La television, Gravina explained his departure, stating, “No one forced me to step down; it was a personal decision.” He acknowledged a commitment made to Azzurri fans – Italy’s national team supporters – to secure qualification for the tournament. “I was unfortunately unable to keep that promise.”
The decision stemmed from a defeat in the “play-off” final against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Gravina emphasized that his resignation was a consequence of failing to meet this key objective, highlighting the disappointment surrounding Italy’s absence from the upcoming world cup. He reiterated his belief that the passion and support of Italian fans should be the primary factor in determining the nation’s performance in the cup.
