Alarm from the EU: RMV risks losing 49 million euros due to reforms

EU Warns RMV Risks Losing €49 Million Due to Macedonian Reforms

Brussels – The European Union has expressed concern that the Republic of North Macedonia’s progress on key reform initiatives could result in a significant financial loss. According to European Parliament reporter Thomas Weitz, the government in Skopje has yet to finalize eight of the ten items outlined in the reform agenda by June. Speaking to TV Kanal 5, Weitz highlighted the potential consequences, stating, “June is very close and I greatly hope that the government will achieve this.” He noted that over the past seven weeks, some advancements have been observed, but only two of the ten reform points have been fully met.

The potential financial impact is estimated at €49 million. Key outstanding issues include the implementation of salary adjustments for prosecutors and judges, alongside personnel within various institutions. Weitz emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that failure to complete these reforms could lead to the RMV – likely referring to a European funding mechanism – risking losing this substantial sum.

The European Union is closely monitoring North Macedonia’s efforts to align with EU standards and secure future funding.
