Significant Electricity Debt Burden Shifts to Consumers
01/05/2026 – Consumers across the region are facing a substantial financial burden as over €7 million in unpaid electricity debt is set to be redistributed this year. According to figures released by the Office of the Electricity Regulatory Authority, this represents a continued trend of accumulated debt owed by individuals who have utilized electricity services without payment over extended periods. The issue has persisted, with approximately €8 million in bad debt being levied against other consumers in the previous year.
This year, the anticipated amount to be charged is over €7.32 million. KESCO, the electricity provider, confirmed the ongoing challenge to RTK, highlighting the complex nature of resolving long-standing unpaid accounts. The regulatory authority’s action is intended to address the systemic issue of debt accrued by some consumers.
The process involves identifying individuals with outstanding balances and distributing the debt proportionally to other customers. This approach aims to ensure a fairer distribution of costs within the electricity supply system. The ongoing problem underscores the need for improved debt collection practices and potentially, enhanced consumer awareness regarding payment obligations.
