Atanasoski: It is difficult to achieve positive progress in relations with Bulgaria, at least in the area of history.

Political Analyst Cautions Progress in North Macedonia-Bulgaria Relations Remains Challenging

Skopje – Political analyst Blagojçe Atanasoski has expressed significant difficulty in achieving positive progress regarding relations with Bulgaria, particularly concerning the contentious issue of history. Speaking on the matter, Atanasoski stated that reconciliation within this area remains elusive. “We cannot find reconciliation when it comes to history, because we are not talking about mature European and civilized nations and societies, such as Germany and France, where differences in the past have been transformed into an opportunity to build a common future in the EU,” Atanasoski explained.

He further indicated that the ongoing debate surrounding the historical figure Goce Dellcev continues to represent a significant obstacle between the two nations. Atanasoski attributes the challenges to the nature of Macedonian society. He argues that the country operates within a framework characterized by Balkan nationalism and a rudimentary approach to interpreting historical figures, events, and actions.

“In our country history has always…” Atanasoski concluded, emphasizing the need for a shift in perspective to foster genuine dialogue and cooperation. The analyst’s assessment reflects ongoing tensions between North Macedonia and Bulgaria over historical narratives and their implications for EU integration.
