In Macedonia, 35 percent of the population is overweight.

An escalating rise in body weight poses a substantial health issue and is a concerning trend observed worldwide, including within our nation, especially among children and adolescents. Statistical data reveal that the prevalence of obesity in our country currently sits between 30 and 35 percent. This situation demands particular attention, particularly concerning the operation of centers dedicated to obesity treatment at the Endocrinology Clinic and SPQ “8 Shtatori”.

This week marks the opening of the first obesity management center within the Southeast Region, located in the city of Ohrid. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, this initiative is crucial. Obesity is a serious chronic illness associated with over 200 comorbidities, encompassing cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and numerous other health conditions.

Consequently, a multi-sectoral response and heightened public awareness are exceptionally important. Addressing this growing concern requires a coordinated effort to combat the rising percentage of individuals affected by obesity. The situation underscores the need for proactive measures to safeguard public health and mitigate the associated risks.
