Negotiations between Iran and the United States continue regarding the terms of a potential final agreement to resolve the ongoing conflict. Tensions escalated after both nations reportedly engaged in exchanges of attacks within the Persian Gulf for the second time in three days. In response to the escalating situation, Washington sanctioned Tehran’s newly established Strait of Hormuz transit authority.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) added the Persian Gulf Strait Authority to its list of sanctioned entities. OFAC stated that the authority represented “a new attempt by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to monetize its state-sponsored terror campaign by blackmailing vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.” The Treasury noted that the PGSA “leads a scheme controlled by Iran.”
These actions highlight the continued diplomatic impasse despite ongoing talks aimed at achieving a comprehensive resolution.
The sanctions levied against the transit authority underscore U.S. concerns regarding the actions of Iranian state-affiliated groups operating in critical maritime passages. The differing positions of the two nations suggest significant hurdles remain in reaching a mutually acceptable framework for de-escalation in the region.
