KOMF: Children should not be used in election campaigns, measures are demanded from the CEC

The Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations for the Protection of Children (KOMF) has issued a statement regarding the incorporation of children into election campaign activities, formally calling for intervention from the Central Election Commission (CEC). KOMF expressed concern that despite ongoing advocacy for the non-involvement of minors in political spheres, various political entities continue to feature children in their campaigns. The coalition argues that this practice compromises the fundamental rights and overall well-being of the children involved.

According to KOMF, utilizing children for political aims constitutes a clear violation of established children’s rights standards. Furthermore, this practice contradicts the internationally recognized principle of the best interest of the child, potentially jeopardizing the dignity and necessary protection afforded to minors. KOMF has formally petitioned the CEC to enhance its monitoring of all political activities.

The coalition urged the commission to take proactive measures to observe and address instances where children are inappropriately integrated into the electoral process. In situations where the inclusion of children is observed to violate established guidelines, KOMF called for the CEC to implement appropriate corrective measures to safeguard the minors. The organization stressed that ensuring a protected environment for children during elections is paramount to upholding democratic principles.
