Bytyqi: With inflation of 5.7 percent, the standard of living for citizens is falling

Discussions surrounding the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, inflation, and the standard of living for Albanian citizens are currently sources of division between the ruling party and the opposition. Fatmir Bytyqi, a deputy from the LSDM, criticized a statement made by Prime Minister Mickoski. Bytyqi labeled the Prime Minister’s assertion that Albania ranks among the top five European countries for GDP growth as a “new manipulation.”

He countered this claim by pointing to the current inflation rate of 5.7 percent, arguing that this indicates a decline in the general standard of living for the populace.

Bytyqi highlighted another aspect of economic data, noting that final consumption accounts for up to 86.4% of the GDP. He asserted that this key economic parameter had been omitted by the Prime Minister during a recent address. According to Bytyqi, the reported GDP growth is largely driven by consumption.

However, he emphasized that this consumption growth occurs amidst high price levels, specifically high inflation. He explained that when citizens must spend more money to purchase the same goods and services, the resulting nominal consumption figures will naturally increase, which is the underlying factor boosting the reported GDP percentage.
