Britain warns Kosovo: Blockade risks international support

The British ambassador to Pristina, Jonathan Hargreaves, issued a caution regarding the political stability of Kosovo, warning that the continuation of the current political blockade could jeopardize the nation’s international credibility and strain support from its allies. In a statement delivered to Radio Free Europe following the parliamentary elections held on July 7, Hargreaves commended the electorate for their participation and acknowledged the Central Election Commission for successfully organizing the polls with short notice. Despite the positive remarks regarding the electoral process, the British diplomat emphasized that the ongoing political crisis poses a significant threat to Kosovo’s future trajectory.

Hargreaves highlighted that the foundational constitutional framework of Kosovo is designed to foster cooperation among its institutions rather than accommodating political dominance. The ambassador noted that while Kosovo should take pride in its democratic journey since gaining independence, the current impasse creates substantial risks. He affirmed the United Kingdom’s continued commitment, stating that the UK remains supportive of Kosovo through its history.

The core message conveyed was that persistent political deadlock, exemplified by the blockade, undermines the democratic progress achieved and necessitates a return to cooperative governance to secure sustained international backing for Kosovo.
