Beware of downloading video games – over 400,000 infected computers

Malwarebytes researchers have issued an alert regarding a novel malicious campaign distributing malware through pirated versions of popular PC video games. According to their estimates, the threat has already compromised over 400,000 devices worldwide. Attackers are utilizing modified and unauthorized installers of well-known titles, including Far Cry, Need for Speed, FIFA, and Assassin’s Creed, to distribute the harmful payload.

The infection process relies on deceiving users into initiating the downloading of what they believe to be legitimate, free versions of the games. While the initial experience may appear functional, the malware activates stealthily during the background installation phase, bypassing standard user detection. Researchers have identified this specific threat as the “RenEngine loader.” This malware employs a sophisticated technique where a portion of its malicious code is deliberately concealed within a seemingly legitimate utility or component of the installation package.

This method allows the threat to gain system access without triggering immediate security alerts. Users attempting to acquire these pirated video game packages are advised to exercise extreme caution, as the apparent convenience of obtaining free content masks a significant security risk to their operating systems.
