The Reçaku Massacre, the trial in absentia for 21 accused begins next month

The Special Prosecutor’s Office of Kosovo has made detailed allegations public through a formal indictment concerning the events at Reçak. This legal filing addresses the alleged massacre of Albanian civilians that occurred in the village of Reçak, Shtime, on January 15, 1999. The document names 21 suspects, who are accused of war crimes related to the operation conducted by Serbian forces in the area.

The 91-page indictment provides a comprehensive account of the alleged atrocities, detailing instances of killings, inhumane treatment, forced displacements, and the systematic destruction of civilian property. According to the prosecutor’s office, the accused, identified as members of the Serbian police and military forces, directly participated in these acts. The evidence presented in the indictment includes severe accounts of physical harm.

For example, the filing specifies that one victim sustained a total of 20 gunshot wounds. Furthermore, the document contains a detailed table cataloging 40 victims, specifying the precise number of wounds each individual received and detailing the organs that were damaged. The filing establishes a foundation for what is expected to be a significant trial.

The prosecution alleges that the accused forces were directly responsible for the comprehensive pattern of violence described. The release of this detailed indictment marks a major step in the pursuit of accountability for the events that took place during that period.
