The Prespa Agreement, which concluded a protracted dispute between North Macedonia and Greece, was formally signed on June 17, 2018. The signing ceremony took place in the village of Nivitsi (Psarades), situated on the shores of Lake Prespa. The document was signed by the respective Foreign Ministers of Macedonia and Greece, Nikola Dimitrov and Nikos Kotzias.
The event was attended by the then Prime Ministers of both nations, Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras, who acted as mediators during the negotiations. High-ranking international officials were also present, including former European Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn and former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, alongside representatives from both Macedonian and Greek governments. Following the initial signing, the agreement required ratification by the legislative bodies of both countries.
This process was completed approximately eight months after the initial signing, when the Prespa Agreement was subsequently approved by the Macedonian Parliament and the Greek Parliament. The signing marked a significant diplomatic milestone, resolving long-standing bilateral tensions between the two Balkan nations.
