Opposition councilors in Tetovë are demanding an urgent session regarding street names, stating that the Constitutional Court’s decision is an attack on Albanian identity.

Municipal councilors representing the National Alliance for Integration and Albanian Connection in Tetova have formally requested an urgent council session. The meeting is intended to address the implications of the Constitutional Court’s recent decision concerning the removal of Albanian names from the city’s streets and public squares. During a press conference, Councilor Berat Murati addressed the councilors’ concerns, characterizing the court’s ruling as an action detrimental to the cultural identity and dignity of the residents of Tetova.

Murati stated that the councilors are calling for immediate discussion regarding the ruling, framing it not merely as a legal determination but as a challenge to the community’s heritage. He referenced a previous approval, noting that in 2006, the BDI had endorsed the decision with unanimous votes from councilors across all communities, citing adherence to the Badinter principle. Consequently, the group is demanding that this original decision be re-approved by the council.

The request for an urgent session underscores the political sensitivity surrounding the naming conventions in Tetova. The councilors maintain that the continuity of Albanian names in the urban landscape is a matter of cultural preservation. Their demand for immediate deliberation aims to revisit the foundational decisions regarding public naming, thereby seeking a formal council response to the court’s directive.

The focus remains on achieving a resolution through the legislative body regarding the status of these historical place names.
