Israel cuts off contacts with Kaja Kallas

Israel has reportedly decided to cease official contacts with the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, signaling a deepening diplomatic rift between the Israeli government and European institutions. Israeli media cited Kallas’ ongoing criticism of Israel’s policies in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including her advocacy for EU discussions on potential measures against Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories. Israeli Foreign Ministry sources indicated that Kallas is adopting a unilateral approach, arguing her actions do not advance dialogue or cooperation.

According to these sources, the contact severance is limited to Kallas in her personal and political capacity, with communication with other EU bodies expected to continue. Kallas, in her role as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has been a prominent European voice advocating for increased diplomatic pressure on Israel regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza. She has repeatedly called for adherence to international law, civilian protection, and unimpeded humanitarian access to conflict zones.

Intensifying debates within the EU have focused on potentially imposing measures against Israeli settlers accused of violence against Palestinians, and limiting economic cooperation linked to settlements in occupied territories. The Israeli government has strongly opposed these discussions, deeming them unfair and politically motivated. This action by Israel occurs as relations between Tel Aviv and several European capitals have worsened due to the Gaza conflict.

While some EU member states have called for reviewing cooperation agreements, experts suggest that cutting ties with Kallas does not signal a total breakdown with the EU, which remains a vital economic and political partner for Israel. Nevertheless, the move indicates a new phase of heightened tension between the Israeli government and European diplomacy concerning the Middle East conflict.
