Albanian Customs reacts: Three VLEN officials could pass freely, but preferred to return and not cross the border

Three high-profile North Macedonian officials—including MP and coordinator of the VLEN parliamentary group Bekim Qoku, MP Adnan Azizi, and Deputy Secretary General of the Government Hasim Murtezani—have claimed they were prevented from entering Albanian territory yesterday. However, conflicting reports emerged regarding the incident at the Qafë-Thanë border crossing. Sources monitoring the situation from the Albanian side informed news outlets that there were no recorded incidents or official stops concerning the three Macedonian officials attempting to cross into the country.

Conversely, border and migration authorities operating in southern Albania provided a different account of the day’s events. These sources stated that while the three officials were present, the primary issue preventing entry related to a fourth accompanying citizen. This individual allegedly presented documentation issues that barred them from entering the Republic of Albania.

According to the Albanian border officials, the three officials in question were technically able to pass through the crossing unimpeded. However, they reportedly opted not to proceed, choosing instead to return to their side of the border. This account suggests that the alleged detention was not due to any action taken against the Macedonian officials, but rather a decision made by the group based on the status of the fourth traveler.
