The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) unanimously passed a motion during its Winter Congress in Ankara, offering explicit support to the press operating within Kosovo. The resolution addresses the issue of disproportionate fines levied against various members of the media by the Independent Media Commission (IMC). In the motion, the EFJ asserted that these financial penalties appear to function as an effort to restrict freedom of expression and public debate across Kosovo.
The organization noted that these actions have occurred subsequent to complaints and demands originating from members of the ruling party, Vetëvendosje. Consequently, the Congress authorized the EFJ’s Executive Board to issue a formal appeal. This appeal is directed at Vetëvendosje, urging the party to cease any form of attack against journalists and the press.
Furthermore, the EFJ is mandated to officially communicate with the IMC, requesting that the commission adhere strictly to its defined competencies. Speaking at the Congress, EFJ President Maja Sever affirmed the depth of international backing for the sector. She stated that the journalists and the media in Kosovo have the full support of the European community to continue their professional work without undue hindrance.
The resolution underscores the commitment of the EFJ to safeguarding press freedom across the region.
