At its Winter Congress held in Ankara, the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) unanimously adopted a resolution offering support to the press in Kosovo. The motion specifically addressed the issue of disproportionate fines levied against local media outlets by the Independent Media Commission (IMC). According to the text of the resolution, the EFJ stated that these penalties represent an effort to curtail freedom of expression and debate within Kosovo.
The federation noted that these actions followed complaints and demands originating from members of the ruling political party, Vetëvendosje. In response, the Congress authorized the EFJ’s Executive Board to formally petition Vetëvendosje to cease any form of targeting or attacks against journalists and the broader media sector. Furthermore, the board was empowered to write officially to the IMC, requesting that the commission strictly operate within the scope of its established competencies.
Maja Sever, the President of the EFJ, issued a statement emphasizing the solidarity surrounding the profession. She confirmed that the journalists and media workers in Kosovo have the full support of the European community to continue their reporting and professional activities without undue hindrance. The federation’s action underscores an international commitment to upholding press freedom across the region.
