Meteorologists warn: “Heat dome” is covering Europe, temperatures up to 45°C

European meteorologists are issuing warnings regarding the potential formation of a significant “heat dome” over the continent, an atmospheric pattern predicted to cause severe heat waves in the coming days and weeks. According to analyses from Severe Weather Europe, temperatures in certain regions of Europe could approach or exceed 45 degrees Celsius. This phenomenon occurs when a powerful, stable high-pressure system traps hot air near the surface, effectively blocking normal air circulation.

The hot air mass is forecasted to track from North Africa toward Southern and Central Europe, initially affecting areas including Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy, before expanding across the continent. Meteorologists note that these conditions represent a significant deviation from normal seasonal patterns, with some regions expecting temperatures 12 to 16 degrees Celsius above average. While the Balkans are expected to experience intense heat, with temperatures potentially exceeding 30 degrees Celsius and nearing 35 degrees in some areas, the most extreme heat—around 45 degrees Celsius—is projected for Southwestern Europe.

Experts caution that these heat domes are responsible for some of Europe’s deadliest recent heatwaves. Beyond extreme temperatures, these atmospheric events heighten the risk of prolonged droughts, increased forest fire danger, and serious public health issues, particularly for the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. Consequently, meteorologists advise the public to limit prolonged sun exposure during the hottest parts of the day, ensure adequate hydration, and take heightened care of vulnerable populations across Europe.
