New canal leaves thousands of hectares dry; Pollog gardens block construction work, demanding water for irrigation

Farmers in several villages within the Pollogu region have raised concerns regarding a recently constructed irrigation system, stating that a new canal has significantly altered the traditional flow of water. Residents report that the depth of the canal poses a major logistical challenge, as its level is situated approximately two meters below the surface required for effective irrigation. One local resident expressed skepticism regarding the engineering choices, noting that historical water collection methods utilized the natural slope, a practice followed by multiple generations in the area.

The concern centers on the feasibility of extracting sufficient water from a system built at such a subterranean level. While the community currently relies on a temporary conduit, its permanence is uncertain. The impact of these changes has been severe for local agriculture.

Authorities have confirmed that approximately 80% of the agricultural lands across the villages of Sedllarcë, Bërvenicë, Reçicë, Pallçisht, and Kamjan are currently without adequate irrigation supply. In response to what they perceive as inadequate water management and disruption to established agricultural practices, local residents have taken direct action. As a form of protest, groups of farmers have blocked construction activities associated with Corridor 8 in the B area, demanding immediate review of the canal’s design and its impact on the region’s vital water resources.
