Albanian Prime Minister and President, record salaries in the Balkans – 5 times above the national average

Several years ago, a prominent political figure pledged that the national average salary within the country would eventually reach parity with those found in the Western Balkans. At that time, countries such as Serbia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina reported average salaries significantly higher—by an estimated 30% to 50%—than the domestic rate. While the average monthly salary within the country is projected to reach 860 euros gross in 2025, this increase has not been accompanied by sufficient retention of the workforce.

A comparative analysis reveals a substantial gap when measured against regional peers. According to data previously published by Monitor, based on official statistics from the respective national statistical agencies, the current average gross salary figures in the region stand as follows: Serbia at 1,290 euros, Bosnia and Herzegovina at 1,245 euros, Montenegro at 1,203 euros, and North Macedonia at 1,100 euros. The comparison indicates that the competitive standing of the local labor market has not improved to match regional standards.

The disparity between the national average salary and the established salary levels in neighboring Western Balkan nations remains substantial. This data suggests that, despite increases in the overall average salary within the country, the labor market continues to face challenges in closing the wage gap with the broader region.
