Micevski: Electric scooters can be ridden by people over 18 years old, with a permitted speed of up to 20 km/h

Proposed amendments to the Law on Municipal Road Safety have been submitted to Parliament for consideration during today’s plenary session. These changes specifically address the regulation and safety parameters surrounding the use of personal mobility devices, particularly electric scooters. The proposed legislation would permit individuals over the age of 18 to operate electric scooters, while simultaneously imposing a strict maximum speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour for all riders.

Furthermore, the amendments introduce significant tightening of penalties for violations. In addition to monetary fines, offenders would face the temporary seizure of the scooter for a period of 30 days. Nikola Micevski, Coordinator of the Parliamentary Group of OBRM-PDUKM and one of the amendment proposers, presented the changes, citing recent safety statistics as the primary motivation.

According to the data presented, analyses covering the past two and a half years indicate that approximately 2,000 individuals were involved in traffic accidents. These incidents resulted in 46 fatalities and 556 instances of serious injury, underscoring the need for updated regulatory measures concerning these vehicles. The proposed adjustments aim to standardize operation and enhance public safety by establishing clearer legal boundaries for scooters use on municipal roads.

The plenary session is scheduled to debate the scope and implementation of these revised regulations.
