Bajram Rexhepi, the head of the BDI branch in Tetovo, announced that a decision was reached during a recent meeting of BDI structures to organize a protest march in Iliria Square. In a statement released via Facebook, Rexhepi addressed the ongoing dispute regarding the municipality’s handling of local street and square names. The announcement detailed that the BDI leadership contends that the Municipality of Tetovo has exhibited complicity in the alleged cancellation or alteration of historical place names.
Rexhepi stated that following the meeting, which took place in the presence of leader Ali Ahmeti, the party decided that the community of Tetovo would not remain silent regarding what they characterize as an infringement upon the area’s history, identity, and dignity. The protest call stems from perceived inaction by the local municipal government. According to Rexhepi, the Municipality of Tetovo has failed to respond to formal requests for an urgent session.
Furthermore, the statement cited rulings from the Constitutional Court, noting that the municipality has reportedly not provided requested documentation on four separate occasions over nearly the past year. The BDI leadership interprets this pattern of non-response as more than simple administrative negligence. They assert that the municipal conduct suggests a deliberate stance concerning the naming conventions within Tetovo.
Consequently, the group has indicated that their organized protest will serve as a formal objection to the current administrative trajectory.
