Hot air balloon engulfed in flames, 8 people die in Brazil

A hot air balloon experienced a fire and subsequently crashed in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, resulting in eight fatalities and injuring thirteen individuals. A total of 21 people, including the pilot, were aboard the balloon at the time of the incident. According to authorities investigating the scene, the fire originated within the balloon’s basket while the aircraft was airborne.

When the fire erupted, the pilot initiated an emergency descent procedure. Several passengers managed to exit the balloon as it neared the ground. However, the reduction in weight following these departures caused the balloon to ascend again, leaving the remaining people unable to escape the situation.

Visual evidence circulating on social media depicts the balloon engulfed in flames and heavy smoke before its final descent. Images also show several people attempting to jump or fall from the structure in an effort to evade the intense fire. The incident underscores the inherent risks associated with hot air balloon flights.

Emergency response teams were mobilized to the site following the crash. Authorities are currently investigating the precise cause of the fire to determine accountability and to review safety protocols for such aerial activities involving people. The investigation aims to provide a full account of the sequence of events that led to the loss of life and injuries.
