The Democratic Union for Integration (BDI) organized a protest in the city of Tetovo today, demonstrating opposition to the Constitutional Court’s recent decision that annulled a 2007 ruling concerning street names within the municipality. The demonstration commenced in the central city square before proceeding toward the Tetovo Municipality offices. Protesters gathered in the square carrying banners bearing slogans critical of historical commemorations and the specific ruling.
Among the visible inscriptions were “Jugo VLEN TITO,” “There is no peace with commemoration,” and “In the Iliria square, there is no place for Tito,” alongside calls for resistance starting from Tetovo. Speaking to the assembled citizens, BDI representative Bajram Rexhepi stated that the protest was a direct response to the “scandalous decision” issued by the Constitutional Court regarding the names in the city. He emphasized that the march was organized as a consequence of the court’s action.
The central demand articulated by the BDI leadership was the reissuance of the Constitutional Court’s decision. The demonstration highlighted significant local political disagreement stemming from the judicial ruling concerning the city’s nomenclature. The gathering in the Tetovo square served as a visible expression of dissent against the judicial outcome, keeping the focus on the contested nature of the initial 2007 decision and its subsequent annulment.
The protest underscored the ongoing political sensitivity surrounding public memorialization and historical naming conventions in Tetovo.
