Volkswagen will cut 100,000 jobs and close four factories

Volkswagen has announced plans to significantly reduce its workforce across its primary brands, including VW, Audi, and Porsche, as well as its software division, CARIAD. Initially, the company projected a reduction of 50,000 jobs by the end of the decade. However, a recently released report suggests that the scope of these cost-cutting measures may be substantially larger, potentially doubling the number of potential layoffs to 100,000.

The timeline for these workforce reductions remains uncertain, with details pending regarding whether the cuts will conclude by 2030 or extend into the following decade. Current employment agreements provide some degree of job security for the company’s employees; specifically, Volkswagen maintains job security agreements through 2030, while Audi’s agreements are valid until the end of 2033. Furthermore, industry reports indicate that Volkswagen intends to close a minimum of four manufacturing facilities.

These slated closures include locations in Zwickau, Emden, Hanover, and Neckarsulm. These announced plans signal a major restructuring effort within the corporation as it navigates the evolving automotive market. The scale of the planned cuts suggests a significant overhaul of the company’s operational footprint and workforce structure.
