In North Macedonia, the need for donated organs remains significant, with current statistics showing 168 patients awaiting kidney transplants, 37 awaiting heart transplants, 12 for liver transplants, and 23 for cornea transplants. To address the ongoing demand for life-saving procedures, the Ministry of Health announced a new initiative designed to streamline organ donation registration. Minister of Health Azir Aliu, alongside the national transplant coordinator Biljana Kuzmanovska, unveiled a new module within the national “Termini Im” system.
This development allows all citizens residing in macedonia to formally register their wishes regarding organ and tissue donation after death. Under the revised legal framework, any adult citizen can now declare their donation status by visiting their primary care physician. This declaration process requires the individual to affirm whether they consent to becoming a donor.
The decision must be made in person, formally signed, and subsequently certified by the attending physician before being entered into the national electronic record. The implementation of this centralized system aims to enhance the pool of available organs for necessary transplants across the country. Officials emphasized that the process places the emphasis on personal autonomy, ensuring that participation is voluntary and based on the individual’s explicit will.
This new digital integration is intended to make the process of registering one’s wishes for organ donation clearer and more accessible to the general patient population.
