The Special Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Kosovo has submitted two indictments to the Basic Court in Pristina, recommending a trial in absentia for the alleged crime of “War crimes against the civilian population.”
In the first case, the Special Prosecutor’s Office has charged individuals identified as J.J. and A.S. The indictment alleges that these defendants, who served as guards at the Pristina Prison and its facility in Lipjan, subjected Albanian prisoners to mistreatment between 1998 and 1999.
The charges detail the use of inhumane methods, including torture with various implements such as rubber hoses, metal blades, whips, and stones, reportedly inflicting injuries up to the point of near death, and resulting in fatalities. The second set of charges filed by the Special Prosecutor’s Office targets four defendants: L.S., D.L., S.A., and B.S. These individuals are accused of misconduct in their official capacity as guards at the Pristina Prison.
The detailed allegations concerning this group of defendants are related to their actions while serving at the aforementioned correctional facility. Both indictments represent significant legal actions brought by the special prosecutor’s body concerning alleged wartime atrocities.
